Spain’s flag carrier and a member of the IAG group (alongside British Airways and Vueling), Iberia flies worldwide from its Madrid-Barajas hub — most notably to Latin America, for which it is one of Europe’s main gateways. Its rules for dogs are among the clearest in Europe.

In the cabin: up to 8 kg (18 lb)

Iberia accepts a dog in the cabin if its weight, carrier included, does not exceed 8 kg (18 lb). The soft-sided bag must measure at most 45 × 35 × 25 cm (18 × 14 × 10 in) and fit under the seat. The fee is reasonable: around €50 (~$60) on domestic and European flights, up to €150 (~$170) on long-haul routes.

In the hold: up to 45 kg (99 lb), then cargo

Above 8 kg (18 lb), Iberia offers the hold, a pressurized and heated compartment, for a combined dog + crate weight of up to 45 kg (99 lb). The container must be a rigid IATA-compliant crate.

For dogs above that weight, Iberia directs you to its dedicated cargo service, Woof Airlines, which organizes transport for larger dogs. As almost everywhere, brachycephalic breeds are banned from the hold for health reasons.

How much does it cost?

Route Cabin
Domestic / European flights about €50 (~$60)
Long-haul (Latin America…) up to €150 ($170)

The hold fee depends on the destination and is confirmed at booking; cargo transport (Woof Airlines) is quoted individually. These amounts are indicative.

How to book

  1. Book your flight, then add your dog with Iberia: spots are limited in both the cabin and the hold.
  2. For a dog over 45 kg (99 lb), contact Woof Airlines (cargo service).
  3. Gather the documents: microchip, rabies vaccination, pet passport or health certificate, plus destination-specific requirements for Latin America — see our guide to international travel with a dog.
  4. Prepare an IATA crate (hold) or a compliant soft carrier (cabin).

If Iberia isn’t the right fit

For a small dog up to 10 kg (22 lb) on a European flight, its low-cost subsidiary Vueling offers a more generous cabin limit. For large dogs outside Latin America, compare Air France, KLM and the others in our airline pet policy comparison.
