A Spanish low-cost carrier in the IAG group (alongside Iberia and British Airways), Vueling flies a dense network across Spain, France and the Mediterranean, with a hub in Barcelona. For owners of small and medium dogs, it has one precious advantage: a more generous cabin weight limit than most airlines.

In the cabin: up to 10 kg (22 lb), a real advantage

Where Air France, KLM or Lufthansa stop at 8 kg (18 lb), Vueling allows up to 10 kg (22 lb) (dog + carrier). That 2 kg (4.4 lb) difference changes everything for a dachshund, a light cocker spaniel or a small mixed breed: it can travel in the cabin, next to you, rather than in the hold.

The carrier must be soft-sided and measure at most 45 × 39 × 21 cm (18 × 15 × 8 in). The fee is among the lowest on the market: expect about €30–60 (~$35–70) depending on the flight. Book early, because the number of pets per flight is limited.

No hold

Vueling accepts no dogs in the hold. If your dog weighs more than 10 kg (22 lb), this airline is not an option: you’ll need a carrier that offers the hold, such as Iberia (same group), Air France or Transavia.

Destination restrictions

An important point that’s often overlooked: Vueling does not carry dogs to the United Kingdom, Ireland or Iceland, because of the specific animal-health regulations of these island nations. Check your destination before booking. For other countries’ entry rules, see our guide to international travel with a dog.

How to book

  1. When booking your flight, add the “pet in cabin” option. The number of pet spots is limited.
  2. Check that your destination is not excluded (UK, Ireland, Iceland).
  3. Prepare the documents (microchip, valid rabies vaccination, pet passport or health certificate depending on your departure country) and a compliant soft carrier.

Since Vueling serves many summer and beach destinations, think about your dog’s comfort in hot weather: see our advice on heatstroke and our ideas for dog-friendly beaches.

If Vueling isn’t the right fit

Dog over 10 kg (22 lb), or headed to the UK? Look at Iberia (hold up to 45 kg / 99 lb) or the full-service carriers. Our airline pet policy comparison helps you find the right alternative for your route.
